Early IPAD thoughts

Steve Jobs has been touted as a marketing genius . the IPAD (early versions were out yesterday) display his ability to design a technology offerring as a product that people can come together…right now… over. The Ipad is a device for the times. the smaller sleeker netbook that looks more like a digital picture frame with bells and whistles is a commercial winner because its priced for the times and foreshadows the entretainment revolution to come , with streaming tv and movies in 3g(maybe 4g).

Early views of the IPAD give  the following:

Its a hard plastic , lightweight notepad with a slight (appelicious) bulge and is as light as a clip-pad .

It has a 8X7 touchscreen and mimics all the features of an Ipod touch(and presumably the Iphone, when the 3g version is released.) It runs on Apple’s OS and has all the apple programs and apps…applications.

It boasts about 10 hours of power, and has an onscreen keyboard and has built in speakers. it is also bluetooth compatible and can connect to other apple/ipod compatible devices effectively.

The IPAD’s drawbacks are 1.price (at $400-$800 retail, its twice to four times as expensive as a netbook) 2. no internet connection except the wifi connection(theyre fixing it but will probably add $100-150 to the price whn they do)3. no external memory slots (which is a problem with all apple products), 4. properitorial tech and accessories(ie,not IMB clone-able and no linux app hackable) 5. too entretainment centered and not enough business focussed..its an awesome audio visual device that looks like a powerful digital photo frame..that can do email and text, but to do any real work you may need to dock it into a big screen keyboard dock..or a wii console, which they will no doubt sell.

If the Ipad is meant for the audio visual generation of 4 G TV, gaming  and movie streaming , it is slightly early, and the screen is too small for it. If it is the walkman-netbook, it is too clunkily big for adding style to the millenial on the subway.

Waht it is is an expensive toy that can display awesome graphics- pics and movies(blue movies in HD!) and do some medium serious browsing and email.

If you have a palm pre, you don’t need an Ipad.
